Coroner: Man in ditch bled out from gunshot wound to back

Posted: Updated:

DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- The man who was found dead in a ditch along Dorchester Road last week died from loss of blood due to a gunshot wound to his back, the coroner's office reported Tuesday.

The gunshot cut through an artery and the man's lung, Coroner Chris Nisbet said.

Police last week said the death stemmed from a fight and shooting at a night club on Thursday night, officials said.

According to Dorchester County Sheriff's officials, several people at Rehab Bar got in to a fight that escalated into gunfire early Friday morning. Deputies responded around 2:30 a.m., officials said.

Four people were sent to Trident Medical Center as a result of that fight; at least one of them had gun shot wounds, officials said.

The body found around 6:45 a.m. Friday was connected to the shooting, officials said.

"I've been going here a year and a half and nothing like this has ever happened," said Christopher VanOstrand, a student at the cosmetology school located in the same shopping center as Rehab. "I hope and assume it's an isolated incident. I hope it doesn't negatively impact any businesses here, especially the school."

According to the Dorchester County coroner, the victim was Rashaad Lamarks Banks, 26, of North Charleston.

The coroner said it appeared Banks died of a gunshot wound, but the official cause of death won't be determined until after an autopsy scheduled for Saturday.

Officials have not named suspects in the shooting, nor have they responded to questions from ABCNews4 regarding why Banks's body was missed during the initial investigation.
