CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The product that made South Carolina 1 of the richest in colonial North America is being harvested again along the coast.

A 3-day rice harvest at Middleton Place plantation outside Charleston is underway.

The plantation grows and harvests rice using the same methods as in colonial times. The plantation has cultivated its own quarter-acre rice field for about a decade. The field allows visitors to see how rice is harvested. School children will get the chance later to winnow the rice.

This year's harvest coincides with the Lowcountry Rice Culture Forum.

The forum developed in part by artist Jonathan Green features events focusing on the significant rice in colonial times and how rice, class, art and history still influence the Southeast today.
