Charleston, S.C. (WCIV) — Known best for his on-screen work, actor Gary Sinise rocked the stage in Charleston Saturday night for a cause close to his heart.

"My wife's two brothers are Vietnam veterans. I started to get educated as a young man about the service and the Vietnam war and what our warriors went through at the time," he said. "It was shameful the way we were treating our veterans returning from war."

Sinise played wounded Vietnam veteran Lt. Dan in the movie Forrest Gump.

For the first time, he moved his Lieutenant Dan Band Weekend from Beaufort to Charleston in hopes of raising more for wounded veterans.

"We wanted more people to attend and certainly we need to raise more money," he said. "And that's what we are doing here raising money for the Independence Fund for our wounded warriors and we want as many people to come out as possible."

The change in venue brought thousands to buy tickets and fill Johnson Hagood stadium.

"It's absolutely exciting for us when we heard Lt. Dan was coming several months ago we said, 'It's going to be at the Citadel!'" said General John Rosa.

The droves of fans said they came for the cause.

They also came to support the man who shed star power on of the needs of our warriors.

"Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan band support the troops. Where they go I will follow," said Chaplin Bill.

Fans of the Lt. Dan band said this is something they'd like to see every year in Charleston.
