GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- A pedestrian is dead after being hit by a car in the middle of the road on Saturday night, said troopers with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Troopers said a vehicle was traveling south on Highway 17 in the area of High Market Street at about 11:35 p.m. when a 44-year-old driver struck and killed a pedestrian wearing dark clothing.
The pedestrian was in the roadway, troopers said.
Kathleen Elmore, the driver of the vehicle, and three passengers were taken to Georgetown Memorial Hospital.
Elmore told ABC News 4 she was driving toward Andrews with her son and two young grandchildren when she saw something near a set of train tracks and slowed down.
She said she tried to swerve to avoid hitting the pedestrian but the pedestrian stepped into the lane.
Elmore said she did not mean to hit the pedestrian and is sorry for the family's loss.
The pedestrian's name has not been released.
Elmore said no one in her vehicle was injured.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the incident.
