'Open Cockpit Sunday' held at Patriots Point

Posted: Updated:

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- People got the chance to climb into a handful of planes that are not usually open Sunday at Patriot's Point.

It was the first Open Cockpit Sunday of the fall season.

The program started in 2011 and allows guests to visit exhibits that are not part of the regular tours on the USS Yorktown.

People can climb into the cockpits of planes including the SBD Dauntless, F-9 Cougar, H-1 Huey, S-3 Viking, H-3 Sea King, F-18 Hornet and the A-6 Intruder.

"Open Cockpit Sunday has been successful in aiding our efforts to educate the public about our rich military history," said Executive Director Mac Burdette.  "It's part of our mission; but it's also a great opportunity for our visitors - children and adults alike - to experience Patriots Point in a whole new way and to walk in the steps of heroes."

The program happens one Sunday every month.

The next Open Cockpit Sunday is scheduled for October 13.
