Oil spill at St. Stephen Powerhouse was minor

ST. STEPHEN, S.C. (WCIV) -- An oil spill at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Charleston District's St. Stephen Powerhouse is in the process of being cleaned up.

According to officials, the spill happened at approximately 8:30 a.m. within the rediversion canal. The spill has been contained and plans for a clean-up are underway thus minimizing the impact to the environment, officials said.

Officials are still working to determine what caused the spill, but said it happened during maintenance.

The oil has been identified as hydraulic oil from a piece of equipment which controls the speed of the hydro-electric turbine, which is less toxic than other kinds of oil.

An environmental contractor is mobilizing now for removal of all spilled oil, officials said.

Crews are still gathering information, but said an update would be released Tuesday.
