Nix 526 group not stopping

JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- George Cupp moved to the Lowcountry seven years ago to be closer to his grandchildren and for the natural beauty. He has since joined the fight against I-526.

"It's going to be detrimental to the beautiful environment that's down here. It's going to be detrimental in cost to the people who live down here. And it's only going to displace hundreds of families," Cupp said.

Cupp was part of the Nix 526 group that met Monday night on Johns Island.

The group has asked homeowners to file claims against Charleston County. Members hoped they could ensure they were fairly compensated, or even could stop the county from building.

"There is a better-than-50-percent chance that we will defeat this road so it's important for us to keep vigilant at this point and support each other," group leader Robin Welch said.

But Councilman Teddy Pryor said the council would not back down. County Council voted last December to move forward.

"As soon as we get the go ahead from SCDOT and the bank, we're moving forward. This is something that's been debated for 40 years. It's time to move on," he said.

But for the members of Nix 526, history, family and nature were enough reason to keep fighting.

"This is about hope," Welch said.

The group has created a website for homeowners to file a claim. You can access it here.
