Former Beaufort principal gives up SC certificate

Posted: Updated:

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - The former Beaufort High School principal who admitted changing about 200 grades has surrendered his South Carolina principal's certificate.

The Beaufort Gazette reported that Dan Durbin voluntarily surrendered his certificate. The state Board of Education last week voted to accept the certificate.

Durbin resigned in February after admitting he charged the grades for 33 students between August 2011 and January 2012. The newspaper reported that in about two-thirds of the cases, the grades were increased to a "D'' from an "F."

Durbin waived his right to a hearing before the state board. He is still eligible to apply for a state teaching certificate, which he does not have.
