Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The final phase of one of the largest redevelopment projects in downtown Charleston is no underway.

City officials joined builders for the groundbreaking of the final phase of the Midtown project on Tuesday at the corner of King and Spring streets.

The final phase will bring a 304-gust hotel, a parking garage, and retail space to the area.

"It really a dream come true a something we've al worked hard on for many years," said Charleston Mayor Joe Riley.

"We don't really know the full impact yet but we expect this to act like a bookend to Charleston place on the upper end of King Street. It'll put people on the street. It's already spurred development in both directions," said project partner Robert Clement III.

The 200-unit Greystar apartment complex is nearly complete. That was the first phase of the project.

The final phase is expected to be completed by the spring of 2015.
