Truckers thanked for their hard work at Harleyville Weigh Station

Posted: Updated:

HARLEYVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) - Every day truck drivers deliver the world's goods to markets across the country. This week their hard work is being honored through National Truck Driver Appreciation week.

As a thank you the South Carolina Trucking Association held a cookout Wednesday afternoon at the Harleyville weigh station.

"They are loving it," said Jerry Peterson, a member of the SC Trucking Association. "They are stopping by and they are just really enjoying it. They want to know why we are doing it for them. So we are letting them know that we are doing it because we are thankful for what they do. I tell them that if it wasn't for them when we went to Walmart it would be an empty building."

Truck drivers at the event seemed shocked by the support. They were thankful for the gratitude.

"Just to know that somebody out there cares with all the drivers on the road today.  You know, you are cut off and all," said Derek Tedder, an SCE&G driver. "But that somebody would put this on is really fabulous."

According to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics report, there are more than 21,000 truck drivers working in South Carolina.
