CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- According to the Alzheimer's Association, nearly 80,000 people in South Carolina are living with Alzheimer's disease or related dementia.

It's a hope for a cure that gets people all over the country, and more than a thousand right here in the Lowcountry, up on their feet. They're walking to raise money and awareness of this debilitating disease.

"There has never been a greater need for the citizens of Charleston to join in the fight against Alzheimer's disease," said Cindy Alewine, President/CEO of the Alzheimer's Association, South Carolina Chapter.  "For many of us, Alzheimer's is personal. We can remember the day that our loved one was diagnosed or when they no longer recognized their family. It is a heartbreaking disease that must be stopped."

Here are a few facts about Alzheimer's.

  • 1 in 3 seniors die with Alzheimer's or another form of dementia
  • Last year 15.4 million caregivers provided 17.5 billion hours of unpaid care valued at $216 billion
  • Another American develops the disease every 68 seconds
  • Alzheimer's is the sixth leading cause of death in the nation.

The Walk to End Alzheimer's will be held at Patriots Point Saturday September 21. It starts at 9 a.m. and the event will include a ceremony to honor those affected by the disease.

Registration is free at www.alz.org/sc/walk. Participants are encouraged to raise funds or make donations. All funds raised will help provide care and support services as well as fund research towards a cure.
