Police: Hitchhiker shot by driver offering ride

COLLETON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Colleton County Sheriff's deputies were called to a Cumberland Street home for reports of a shooting Sunday night.

According to police, a caller told 911 dispatch that a gunshot victim walked up to the home needing help.

The 26-year-old male victim told police he was walking down Windwood Street and stopped a black Honda sedan and asked for a ride to the store.

The victim said the driver agreed and when he pulled out his wallet to give the driver gas money, the driver took his wallet, told him to get out of the car, pulled out a gun and shot the victim in the leg.

The driver is described as a black male with short hair, no facial hair, weighing about 190 lbs and is  around 5'10" to 6'0" tall.

The victim was taken to Colleton County Regional Medical Center.
