Communities In Schools featured in the Phonebank

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - Communities In Schools has been featured in both TIME and Worth magazines. It's considered one of the best charities in the world.  The nonprofit is the reason more than a thousand failing students are able to turn things around and get back on track.

CIS is partners with Charleston and Berkeley County School Districts.  They are inside 30 schools using a Student Support Program that addresses the risk and protective factors that influence a child's academic success and the decision to remain in school.  In doing so CIS uses five basic ideals:

• Every child needs and deserves a personal, one-on-one relationship with a caring adult
• Every child needs and deserves a safe place to learn and grow
• Every child needs and deserves a marketable skill to use upon graduation
• Every child needs and deserves a chance to give back to peers and community
• Every child needs and deserves a healthy start and a healthy future

Between 2012-13 school year 94% of students helped through CIS were promoted to the next grade level, and 92 percent of seniors graduated.

On Wednesday, CIS will be featured on the ABC News 4 Volunteer Four Phonebank.  They are looking for volunteers to help serve as mentors, tutors, and project managers.  In addition to those positions, they are also always looking for folks to help out at events.

If you are interested or would like more information please call into the phonebank between 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. The number is 881-5837.

If you can't call during the phonebank, but still want to help you can always call two other numbers any time of the day. Those numbers are: Dial 2-1-1 or (843) 744-HELP or 1-800-922-2283.
