Mayor: 'Front Street still open for business'

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, S.C. (WCIV) — Friday nights are typically pretty busy along Front Street, but two days after the fire it was a much different atmosphere.

Mayor Jack Scoville is reminding the public that Front Street is still open for business.  He says that while Wednesday's fire destroyed ten businesses, there are still more than 40 stores open for business.

Skip Yeager, the owner of Sweetie's, says he hopes to see business pick back up over the weekend.

"As soon as they move the fence, we'll be a little more obvious. Right now we're sort of behind some tents. We look for the weekend to be a lot better," he said.

In order to encourage a big turnout on Front Street and to help those impacted by the fire, Wildfish Grill, which is also on Front Street, will host a fundraising event on Saturday.

The event will start at noon and last all day.  There will be live music, games, and free food.

Workers are asking that you simply make a donation — no matter how big or small.

And the businesses are doing their part to help those people who lost their jobs as a result of the fire. Brian Tucker, president of the Georgetown County Chamber of Commerce, says they plan to do everything they can to help those people out.

On Oct. 2, the chamber will host a fee job session at 9:30 a.m. and again at 11 a.m.

The chamber is encouraging everyone who lost their job in the fire to attend.

"They will be looking through their database to see what jobs are out there and already available," said Tucker.  "We actually e-mailed all of our chamber members this afternoon.  They understand the situation — so if they have any openings they will be e-mailing us with those."

The event will take place at the Waccamaw Council of Governments at 1230 Highmarket Street.
