Volunteers clean out home of woman missing for 18 months

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Friends and family of a Lowcountry woman who has been missing for 18 months cleaned out her home on Saturday.

Gayle McCaffrey was reported missing in March, 2012.

Friends and family spent their weekend sifting through her belongings and preparing to either donate or throw them away.

Those who knew her best said McCaffrey loved reading, doing creative projects and playing the hand bells.

They said for the first time, they felt like they were finally able to help in some way.

"It's sad to think about what we're doing today," said Donna Parrish, a friend. "I never, ever imagined we would be doing something like this. So yes, it's sad, but at least you feel like you're doing something to help today."

"We always recognize her. We always remember her," said her sister, Debbie Pearson. "It's nice to actually do something. We've spent the last year and a half sitting and waiting. And we're still sitting and waiting for her. The police really are working hard, but it's nice to be physically doing something and take a step forward."

In May, 2012, the Charleston County Sheriff's Office upgraded McCaffrey's missing person's case to a homicide investigation. Deputies also named her husband, Robert, as a suspect.

Since then, deputies have searched the Lowcountry and places in the Upstate for evidence of where she may be, but have so far come up empty-handed.
