Two buildings in Georgetown collapse overnight

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, S.C. (WCIV) -- Two buildings on Front Street collapsed in the early hours of Sunday morning after being damaged in Wednesday's fire, said officials with the Georgetown Police Department.

Officials said they were expecting Zest, a restaurant, and Doodlebugs, a children's clothing store, to fall sometime soon.

Many children who shopped at the various stores left messages on a fence that lines the charred street. One of the letters said simply, "Fire stinks."

City Administrator Chris Carter told the Associated Press the facades collapsed mostly on themselves although some of the rubble fell in the street.

Carter said officials think crews may have to remove the remaining facades because they are unstable, but some hope the old bricks can be used in rebuilding.
