Charleston, S.C. (WCIV) — They prayed for their safety, the long hours worked and the skilled effort in putting the fire out on Front Street.

"The Lord was just giving these guys strength first of all. He was protecting our community it could have been a lot worse," said Jason Williams, head pastor at Screven Baptist Church.

Williams led his congregation in a service on Sunday filled with prayer for the first responders.

"You have to have some type of faith in God to put your life on the line every day and know that he will be with them and their families if something goes wrong. It's a big part of what we do fire and police," said Steven Church.

Church is an officers with the Georgetown City Police Department, who finished a 12-hour shift before the call for the fire came in.

"When we arrived on scene, you could smell smoke, but could see very little, but a few seconds later it was like a volcano from the top of the buildings," he said.

Greg Caddell a US Coast Guard member responded to the fire. He said when he arrived on scene he first thought of his young son who just asked him to take a walk down the Harborwalk.

"It was getting late, I said, 'We can go next weekend and go to the Harborwalk.' Wednesday the fire started. It's like I should have went. Lesson learned," said Caddell.

The congregation at Screven also said a prayer of hope for Georgetown. They prayed for hope Front Street would return and hope the community continues to work together.
