Police: Sleeping aunt arrested after toddler found in roadway

WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Walterboro woman was arrested Friday after a toddler in her care was found in the middle of the street.

According to a police report, officers responded to Beach Road after witnesses found a female black toddler in the roadway, which police described as busy and having a slight blind hill.

Officers were taken to the apartment witnesses believed the child came from. They reportedly found the door wide open, three other children sitting in the living room unattended, and the adults of the household asleep in the bedroom.

A social worker from the Department of Social Services was contacted, as was the child's mother who told police she had dropped her daughter off at her sister's house.

The aunt, identified as 21-year-old Candace McDonald, told police she had just gotten off work and was tired so she fell asleep while the children watched television. She said she did not know the toddler could open the door and didn't know the child had left the apartment until DSS arrived.

DSS did an inspection of the mother's home before giving custody back to her. McDonald was arrested and charged with child neglect.
