DD2 finalizes site for third elementary school

Posted: Updated:

DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- District officials and the board of trustees for Dorchester District 2 announced Monday that they had finalized a site for a third new elementary school.

The new school, designed to hold 1,000 students, will be built on district property on Highway 78 near Alston Middle School. The design mirrors Dacusville Elementary School in Pickens County. The design allows for a second story.

"It has been challenging to find available acreage that would be appropriate for new schools in our district," said School Board Chairman Gail Hughes.

After considering several sites, officials chose the Highway 78 location because it would give them the ability to start the project sooner and open its doors by August 2015.

Officials said using the site near Alston Middle School would allow them to use bus loops, saving time and money on planning and paving new traffic loops.

Currently, the district is using the space as a maintenance and facility as well as several community ball fields that will be moved, officials said.

The board approved the site on Thursday, but details were finalized Friday.

The district's four new schools will add nearly 3,000 seats in the hopes of easing the problems of overcrowding around the district. The three elementary schools are projected to open in August 2015 and the new middle school will open in 2016.
