SCPRT to help Georgetown's tourism business recover

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, S.C. (WCIV) -- The director of the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism announced his department will use its resources to help Georgetown's tourism business recover.

Director Duane Parrish visited Front Street, the site of Wednesday's fire, on Monday at the request of Governor Nikki Haley.

"Governor Haley wants people to continue visiting Georgetown," he said. "She wants them to see the treasure and history you have in this community, and she wants us to help share the message that you're open for business."

The agency plans to schedule editorial postings on its Facebook page that focus specifically on Georgetown, its attractions, major events and visitor amenities. Parrish said they plan to promote the Bridge2Bridge Half Marathon and 5K, and the Georgetown Wooden Boat Show, which are both currently scheduled for next month.

Ten business on Front Street were destroyed in an early-morning on Wednesday.

The local newspaper, The Georgetown Times, donated $25,000 to fire relief.

In addition, thousands of dollars have been donated at various banks to help people and businesses recover.

Chamber of Commerce President Brian Tucker said that by Tuesday afternoon, the town had more than $50,000 in donations.

The website www.GeorgetownFireRelief.com is also up and running.  It's an easy way for those who wish to help the town rebuild to contribute online.
