Boone Hall turns corn maze pink

Posted: Updated:

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- Boone Hall Plantation, a place known for its Halloween celebrations, turned the area from orange to pink on Monday.

It was part of the ribbon cutting ceremony for the 2013 corn maze.

The eight-acre corn maze will display a design that pays tribute to the 20th anniversary of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, which highlights breast cancer awareness in the Lowcountry.

Elizabeth Peterson, the plantation's co-founder, is a breast cancer survivor.

"I look forward to the day when, like polio and smallpox, breast cancer will be a thing of the past," she said.

It may not be a thing of the past, but more people are surviving the disease. Today, there are an estimated 232,340 breast cancer survivors, according to the Susan G. Komen website.

Many of those survivors and supporters in the Lowcountry came out Monday wearing pink shirts and pink gloves to fill the ribbon in the corn maze as a helicopter flew over to take pictures.

"A day like this means being in support with all of my breast cancer survivor sisters and also bringing the community together, because sometimes you feel lonely going through this thing," said Ruth Krems, one of the participants.

Komen Lowcountry has been bringing the community together to fight breast cancer for 20 years.

This year, part of the proceeds from the pumpkin patch at Boone Hall will be donated to the organization

"It's people like Boone Hall who think enough of our community to bring awareness to breast cancer," said Shirley Nilson, a breast cancer survivor. "That's what is important."

The maze and the pumpkin patch will be open through Nov. 2.

The Race for The Cure takes place Oct. 19.
