Meetings in Beaufort focus on bases, sequestration

Posted: Updated:

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - Leaders in Beaufort are holding meetings this week focusing on the effects of federal budget cuts and possible base closures.

The Beaufort Gazette reports the sessions are scheduled for Tuesday at the University of South Carolina Bluffton campus and Thursday at the USC-Beaufort campus. They feature speakers from the Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce's Military Enhancement Committee.

Jack Snider, a retired commander at the Beaufort Marine Corps Air Station, is scheduled to provide an update on area bases. The air station is preparing for the arrival next year of the military's Joint Strike Fighter.

Lowcountry Economic Alliance executive director Kim Statler says the area's three bases mean about $1.2 billion for the local economy but sequesters in military spending could reduce that.
