Officials: School bus ran off road into trees

Posted: Updated:

COLLETON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Crews responded to an accident involving a school bus Tuesday morning.

According to Colleton Fire and Rescue Chief Barry McRoy, the accident happened just after 6 a.m. on Pearce Road just north of Cottageville.

Chief McRoy confirmed there were no kids on bus at the time of the accident but the 57-year-old driver had to be flown out to MUSC.

The bus was traveling northbound and crossed over to the southbound lane before going off the side of the road into the trees, McRoy said. The weight of the trees that fell crushed the cab of the bus, trapping the driver.

LifeNet, based out of Walterboro, landed at Cottageville Elementary and picked up the driver. McRoy said the driver had serious injuries but was in stable condition, talking to rescue crews when she left.
