Week-long celebration marks Hilton Head's 30th

Posted: Updated:

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Hilton Head Island is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its incorporation as a town and the 350th anniversary of its sighting by European explorers.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports the weeklong celebration began Monday with a bike ride along all 57 miles of the resort island's bike paths. There was also an open house at Town Hall.

The town incorporated in 1983. Large scale development had started in the 1970s.

It was nearly 350 years ago that Capt. William Hilton spotted the island that would serve as a landmark for future sailing expeditions.

Events for the week include bus tours and a community party. Former U.S. ambassador to China and 2012 Republican presidential candidate John Huntsman addresses the World Affairs Council of Hilton Head on Friday.
