CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Feeling fatigue, having a sore throat and suffering from a high fever are just some of the symptoms sending people to the doctor in this flu season.

Dr. Barron Nason, owner of Nason Medical Center, said it is unusual for large outbreaks of the flu to happen this early into flu season. He said but his medical center has already been swamped with sick patients suffering from the flu.

"Yesterday we saw one patient and this morning, within four hours, we've seen eight," he said.

Nason believes the number of early outbreaks is a sign of what's to come.

"I predict that it's going to be a very serious influenza season," he said and I recommend everybody be vaccinated as early as possible."

In addition to getting a flu shot, Nason suggests taking basic precautions such as: not drinking after other people and washing your hands.

If you do happen to catch the flu, Nason recommends seeking medical attention. If you have the flu or flu-like symptoms, Nason said it's best to stay away from other people.

Flu season runs from October to March.

One flu shot takes to two weeks to kick in and lasts for a year.

If you do get a flu shot, it does not make you immune to the virus, but it significantly lowers your chances of catching it and decreases the severity of the flu if you catch it.
