SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- A homeless man accused of stealing a gun from a Folly Beach officer in September was arrested Wednesday, said officials with the Dorchester County Sheriff's office.

According to a police report, the officer said she let her longtime friend, David Ryan Shelton, 25, sleep on her couch and get something eat, but when she woke up the following morning, the man, and her .40-caliber handgun and gun belt were gone.

Shelton is charged with larceny and possession of a stolen pistol in connection with the theft.

The officer also reported her handcuffs, a bottle of pepper spray and a box of ammunition as missing.

According to the report, Shelton's mother called deputies after finding the duty belt in a pile of the man's clothing in Ladson. The report states that everything but the handgun and the ammunition were recovered.

Shelton is being held in the Dorchester County Jail.
