One person dead after early morning shooting in Charleston

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A shooting early Tuesday morning left one person dead.

The shooting happened shortly after midnight at a home on Forbes Avenue in West Ashley, according to Charleston police.

The coroner's office has identified the victim as 18-year-old Malcolm Jefferson of Charleston. He died as a result of his gunshot wounds.

According to a police report, people in the area reported hearing several gunshots. When police arrived, they found Jefferson with several wounds to the torso.

Police officials said several people who were at the scene of the shooting were detained for interviews. Police have not released details on the suspect.

Jefferson was taken to Medical University Hospital for treatment and later died there.

The Charleston Police Department is asking anyone who has information about the homicide to please call Charleston Police at 607-6787 or Crime Stoppers at 554-1111.
