JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- Authorities say the driver of a car that went into Ellis Creek on James Island escaped with only minor injuries.

The accident happened around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.  Harbor View Road was closed in both directions from just past the James Island Connector to North Shore Drive while emergency crews worked to pull the car from the water.

Heavy equipment and dive teams were on the scene, and a dispatch supervisor said there was visible damage to a railing on the Ellis Creek Bridge.

Dive teams from Charleston and North Charleston police as well as Charleston County deputies were in the water. A North Charleston fire boat was also dispatched to the wreck.

Charleston Police spokesman  Charles Francis said the woman driving the car was not intoxicated at the time of the accident. She was able to climb out of her car as it sank.

By 5:30 a.m. the car was recovered by a crane, roads were opened and units cleared the scene.

Officials said the woman was not arrested, but it is unclear if she will be ticketed for any traffic violations.
