Reading Partners featured in the Phonebank

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - A crucial part of learning to read and write is having proper support and a person to listen.  Unfortunately, that support is often missing.

Because of that, 9 out of 10 fourth graders from low-income families are not reading at their grade level.

Reading Partners is a nonprofit organization that provides that crucial support to kids that have fallen behind.  The program works with eight Title I schools throughout Charleston and North Charleston.

Students enrolled in the program work one-on-one with a tutor twice a week in 45-minute sessions.  Reading Partners has been very affective in helping children master the fundamental reading skills they need to succeed, but as they grow, so does the need for volunteers.

Reading Partners is currently looking for 200 people to work with 400 students this year. Volunteering is easy and only takes about 45 minutes each week.  If you would like to help, call in to the ABC News 4 Volunteer Four Phonebank Wednesday evening.

From 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. officials with Reading Partners will be taking calls.  The phonebank number is 881-5837.

If you can't call during the phonebank, but still want to help you can always call two other numbers any time of the day. Those numbers are: Dial 2-1-1 or (843) 744-HELP or 1-800-922-2283.
