Sailor accused in double murder returned to Lowcountry

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WCIV) -- A 22-year-old Sailor accused of killing his 26-year-old girlfriend and her 8-year-old daughter returned to Berkeley County Friday afternoon in the custody of deputies.

Jacob Philip had been a fugitive, making his way to Virginia Beach, Va., before being captured by local police. Philip arrived shortly after 2 p.m.

Before allegedly killing Ashley Kaney and her daughter, Riley Burdick, Philip was a student at the Nuclear Power School.

The bodies of Kaney and Burdock were found inside a Berkeley County home after school officials asked deputies for a welfare check at the home.

Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury said Sangaree Intermediate School administrators asked a school social worker to check on Burdock after she did not show up at school this week. When officials arrived at the Kershaw Road home, they knocked and no one answered, so they called in deputies.

The bodies were found in beds in separate bedrooms in the home, Salisbury said. Officials said the deaths were an isolated domestic violence incident.

Salisbury said Tuesday afternoon Burdock was choked to death. Kaney's cause of death was pending a toxicology report, he said.

According to Kaney's mother, Philip and her daughter had gotten into an argument after leaving a bar. Katherine Kaney believes her daughter and granddaughter were murdered late that night or early the next morning.

Officials with the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office said Philip waived his right to a bond hearing.
