JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating deputy-involved shooting, said officials with the Charleston County Sheriff's Department.

Officials said deputies responded to a domestic disturbance between a brother and sister on Greenhill Road at about 10:20 p.m. Saturday.

The sister told deputies her brother threatened her and then ran away, officials said. Deputies located Derryl Drayton, of James Island between Greenhill and Seaside lanes.

Deputies said the Drayton ignored their commands and started swinging at them before he ran off. The deputies found him on Seaside Lane armed with a knife and threatening to harm himself, officials said.

Drayton was aggressive toward the deputies, officials said, and the deputies stunned him twice with a stun gun, but both attempts were ineffective.

Deputies said he stabbed one of them in the knee with the knife, and the deputies started shooting.

Deputies performed CPR and resuscitation efforts until EMS arrived at about 11:00 p.m. and pronounced the man dead, officials said. Officials with the Charleston County Coroner's Office said Drayton died from multiple gunshot wounds.

On Sunday, family members of the dead man started calling for a thorough investigation of the incident.

"Right now we're grieving, the hearts are heavy we don't have all the answers that we need. So, we need answers right now. That's what we need we need answers," said Marcella Drayton, one of Derryl Drayton's sisters.

The man's sister says Drayton was shot in the back while he was walking away from the area.

Drayton's family members say they heard multiple gunshot being fired Saturday night, adding that Derryl Drayton would never hurt anyone.

"Derryl was a church going person. Derryl was a loving and caring person. Derryl would help people in the community; he went places; he did things he helped anybody he can," said Marcella Drayton.

On Monday, sheriff's officials identified the two deputies who fired on Derryl Drayton as William Fawcett and Levi Reiter. The officer who was stabbed in the knee, allegedly by Drayton, did not fire any shots, officials said.

The two deputies have been placed on administrative leave according to agency protocol, officials said.

A press conference has been scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Monday to discuss the shooting.
