CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The Charleston Riverdogs had about a thousand reasons for costume makers to try for a home run Thursday night.

Big time costumes somehow made their way precariously up the bleacher steps for "The Monster Bash…A Ballyard Smash" at The Joe's Ashley View Pub. The party was sponsored by Halloween Express and Guilty Pleasures.

With the event being held outdoors and the Fall temperatures falling as the night went on, many of the more revealing costumes stayed under wraps. And even though an adult toy store was a major sponsor, most of the costumes were more clever than sexy.

A handcrafted Faun towered over the crowd while a "Half Man" tried to keep it together next to a "Tailgate Party" and a "Jobless" Terrell Owens who claimed he would throw touchdowns for food.

Couple's costumes included a devil and his bride, Castaway's Tom Hanks with a lovely Wilson, and (another Tom Hanks character) Forrest Gump wheeling around a "legless" Lt. Dan. Paula Deen even made an appearance with her signature stick of butter.

There was also a bit of a Bill Murray theme with characters from the Ghostbusters and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.

Gamers were represented with impressively crafted costumes from Borderlands (The Psycho, Face McShooty) and Silent Hill (Pyramid Head).

Some of the more endearing creations, however, came from childhood memories. Blueberry Muffin, Gumby, and Marvin the Martian mixed it up with the likes of R2-D2, Electra and  Wonder Woman.

A Halloween themed buffet was available with Octopus dogs, "Eye" meatballs and "Bloody" Brownie Fingers. A new Fall flavor, the limited-edition Pumpkin Beer Shake, was also available for one night only.

DJ Natty Heavy spun the beats that kept party-goers "wobbling" and The Muppets' Animal banging on his drum. Even "Lt. Dan" magically spouted legs and tore up the dance floor with Charlie the Riverdog bouncing along.

The main event, however, was the costume contest with the best costume winner going home with $1,000 in cash and a prize package from event sponsors.

The Top Ten finalists were (in no particular order)

  • Castaway (complete with Fed Ex box)
  • Southern Thunder (a wrestler)
  • Pyramid Head from the video game, Silent Hill
  • Optimus Prime (Transformers)
  • Forrest Gump and Lt. Dan
  • The boys from South Park
  • A Faun (half man, half goat)
  • Marvin the Martian
  • The Predator
  • "Half a Man"
  • Animal and Miss Piggy

Third place went to The Predator, who said he made every part of his costume, minus the mask. Second place went to Forrest Gump and Lt. Dan.

Both runners up received season tickets to every Thirsty Thursday Riverdogs home game and a gift bag from Guilty Pleasures.

The grand prize, $1,000 in cash, went to the very impressive Miss Piggy and Animal.  They also won a prize package from Guilty Pleasures and a bowling party for a dozen of their closest friends at Sparian's bowling alley in Mt. Pleasant.
