Sense of community fostered at Buckshot's restaurant

Posted: Updated:

MCCLELLANVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- Buckshot's is a local soul food joint in McClellanville that has been around for nearly 30 years — and so has its customers.

"Ever since they've open, I come here everyday," said Gussie Hemes, a long time resident of the city.

It's not just the good food that keeps people in this community coming back; it's their ability to be flexible with their customers.

"They have so much concern for people in this community," said Elizabeth Young while sitting at a table with friends from the local senior center. "You don't really have to worry about how much you have to pay because they'll work with you according to your income."

Co-owner Miriam Green believes in the philosophy that sometimes she has to lose to gain. And she lost it all in 1989 when Hurricane Hugo hit and wiped them out.

But she didn't let that stop her.

"We went from a little shack to a big shack, then after Hugo hit we moved on (Highway-) 17 and did a carryout," she said.

Green also began sponsoring the local senior center, the local high school and local churches.

"If we can't give a monetary donation we say, 'Why don't we just cook the food for you?' What we can do, we do -- and what we can't do, we can't do," she said.

And it's their tireless efforts to help the community accompanied with good food that keeps them coming back.

"Anytime you say Buckshot's I'm ready to go," said Young.
