MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- Shirley Nilsen can laugh today, but she remembers the day 10 years ago when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

"My mom had breast cancer. She didn't survive. It was scary. You don't know what to expect," Nilsen said.

Nilsen is proud to breathe a sigh of relief after being cancer free now for 10 years. On Saturday, Nilsen will walk in the Lowcountry Komen Race for the Cure to remember and to raise awareness.

"If I had 1 thing to say to women out there, get your mammogram. It will save your life. I found mine that way," she said.

Komen Lowcountry programs help women gain access to mammograms and deal with having breast cancer. The money raised Saturday will also go toward research for a cure.

"Seventy-five percent goes to our 17-county service area and 25 percent goes to global research for a cure," said Jessica Munday, 2013 race chair.

When Nilsen walks around that course, she knows who she'll have in mind.

"I have four granddaughters. I don't want to see them have breast cancer. That's my goal. That's why I'll be out there Saturday -- for them," she said.

Registration begins at 7 a.m. The fun walk begins at 8 a.m. The timed run begins at 9 a.m.

Race participants are encouraged to take the shuttle to Daniel Island on race day. There is a pick-up point at Mount Pleasant Town Centre and at the CARTA parking lot off West Montague in North Charleston.
