Charleston, S.C. (WCIV) — He's a blast from the USS Yorktown's past. Scrappy a mixed-breed dog, brought on board the USS Yorktown in 1943 by sailors who hid him in a sack.

"Scrappy, he was a godsend to them during that really tough year- '43 and '44 in the South Pacific," said Executive Director of the Yorktown Museum Mac Burdette.

Burdette said children can relate to the USS Yorktown's history that involves Scrappy.

"This is a wonderful museum, but the little kids, sometimes they don't make the connection because it's such a big awesome place," he said. "But when they saw Scrappy, the connection was made so this was our opportunity to really connect with that next generation."

Scrappy is already captivating the minds of preschoolers from Gateway Academy.

"It definitely brings the children into the community and allows them to become familiar with our history," said Jacque Haun, the preschool's director.

Burdette said Scrappy will lead the charge and help share stories about other dogs who were companions to sailors and soldiers during World War II.
