CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Congressman Tom Rice says a Water Resources Act that the U.S. House will vote on this week is good news for South Carolina.

The 7th District representative worked to get a provision helping smaller ports like Georgetown included in the law.

Now ports that handle less than one million tons, like Georgetown, will be eligible for money from the national Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund for harbor improvements. Currently, such ports face a Catch 22 in which if they didn't handle enough cargo, they were not eligible for money for improvements to help them attract more.

The bill also streamlines the process of bringing harbor improvement projects to completion.

Rice is on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
