MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) - The last thing any cancer patient needs to stress about is how to pay their bills, or how to get to medical treatment.  And yet, many patients have to do just that and it takes critical focus away from getting well. That's where the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge Network comes into play.

The  non-profit helps people recover by offering free, home-like accommodations for folks having to travel long distances for treatment. Hope Lodge offers cancer patients and their families a temporary place to stay when their best hope for treatment is in another city.

Here in the Lowcountry the closest branch is the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge Carol Grotnes Belk Campus. It's located across from MUSC and Roper Hospital at 269 Calhoun Street in Charleston.

Guests who stay their are offered:
  • Rooms with private baths
  • Telephones and televisions with cable and DVD players in each room
  • Large kitchens furnished with appliances, dishes, utensils and individual shelf space for each suite
  • Guest computers with Internet access for laptops
  • Easy access to MUSC, Roper St. Francis, and the Veterans Administration hospitals
  • Free transportation to guests provided through the hospitals
  • Common areas with games, books and magazines
  • Educational materials for guests in a Cancer Resource Center
  • Encouragement from staff, volunteers and other guests
  • A healing garden with a patio and large screened in porch

To help pay for these free services, the Hope Lodge is hosting a Pink Ribbon Night at the EarthArt Pottery and Art Studio in the Windemere shopping center.

The party is Thursday, October 24.  All proceeds will go to benefit the Charleston branch.  It's $10 to get and you must be 21 or older.  To make a reservation call 769-4660.

On Wednesday the Hope Lodge will be featured in the Volunteer Four Phone bank.  From 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. volunteers will be taking calls during ABC News 4 newscasts, fielding questions from people available to serve as Wish List Ambassadors. The ambassadors will be asked to collect supply donations from their schools, churches and local businesses. The phone bank number is 881-5837.

If you can't call during the phone bank, but still want to help you can always call two other numbers any time of the day. Those numbers are: Dial 2-1-1 or (843) 744-HELP or 1-800-922-2283.
