CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A pair of sex assaults over the last week triggered an alert to the College of Charleston campus, warning students of the dangers of excessive alcohol use.

According to a release sent out by CofC, the first sex assault happened on Oct. 19 in an apartment near King Street and Burns Alley. A police report shows the woman, who was not a CofC student, was asleep at the time. She woke up with a man on top of her in the act of assaulting her, the report states.

The second incident happened the same day in a parking lot. The victim told Public Safety officials at the school that she had been drinking at an off-campus apartment and left with the assault suspect.

When the two got into a car, the assault happened, CofC reports. School officials said the victim and the suspect are CofC students. The incident is being investigated by the State Law Enforcement Division.

The Department of Public Safety would like to make the campus community aware of the following statistics which were published in Campus Safety Magazine (www.campussafetymagazine.com) in March 2012.

  • Between 20% and 25% of women will experience a completed and/or attempted rape during their college career
  • At least 50% of college student sexual assaults are associated with alcohol use
  • 43% of sexual victimization incidents involve alcohol consumption by victims
  • 69% of sexual victimization incidents involve alcohol consumption by the perpetrator
  • Victims were on a date with the perpetrator in 12.8% of completed rapes and 35% of attempted rapes
  • 90% of acquaintance rapes involve alcohol

Students, Faculty and Staff are cautioned to be mindful of their surroundings.  Walk in groups and in well lighted areas; avoid less traveled short cuts.  Make certain you know where you are going and who you are going with.  Let a friend know your intended location and expected time of return.  College of Charleston, Department of Public Safety, Officers are available for campus escorts.  Sign up for a RAD (Rape Aggression Defense) class at Public Safety, or stop by and get a free whistle for the whistle alert program.
