SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- Officials have confirmed that a Cane Bay Middle School student collided with a car Thursday morning.

Berkeley County School District spokesperson Susan Haire said the student was riding a bicycle and was hit by a vehicle in the vicinity of the Cane Bay schools, but not on school grounds.

"At this time, we understand that the student is conscious and responsive," she said. "EMS was called to the scene, and the child was transported to the hospital, where a school administrator met with a parent."

According to South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Bridget Wyant, both the student and the driver were traveling east on 176.

Trooper Wyant said the 14-year-old bicyclist drifted left on the bike and struck the passenger side of the car.

The area around the three Cane Bay schools is no stranger to traffic problems. A traffic light was installed at Cane Bay Boulevard and Highway 176 last year to help alleviate some of the issues.

In 2011, a Cane Bay High School student was killed while riding his bike home. A driver struck him from behind and then left the scene.
