College sex assault warning criticized

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Some people are questioning a warning issued by the College of Charleston police following two reported sexual assaults near the college's downtown campus.

The notification issued to students Tuesday provided basics about the assaults and noted both victims had been drinking. The email also listed statistics about how often alcohol is a factor for victim or perpetrator in sexual crimes.

Some said that could be interpreted as blaming the victims.

Vice President of Student Affairs Jeri Cabot says that was not the intent. Cabot says consent is the basic issue and just because someone is drinking does not give anyone the right to commit a sexual act.

But she says school officials could not ignore a correlation between drinking and the increased probability of risky behavior.
