PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. (AP/WCIV) - The Highway Patrol arrested the driver of a vehicle that struck and killed a moped rider near Pawleys Island and then drove away.

According to the Highway Patrol, John T. Clarke was charged with leaving the scene of a collision involving death. He is being held at the Georgetown County Detention Center.

The crash occurred late Tuesday on U.S. 17. Georgetown County Coroner Kenny Johnson says the moped rider, 57-year-old Patrick Loper of Pawleys Island, died Wednesday at a local hospital.

Patrol Cpl. Sonny Collins says the vehicle that left the scene had been described as a Honda Civic manufactured between 2006 and 2011.

Authorities say the vehicle would have recent damage.

Officials did not say how they found Clarke.
