Network’s survey finds majority of Americans believe in ghosts

Posted: Updated:

SILVER SPRING, Md. (WCIV) – More than 3 in 4 Americans claim to believe in some kind of ghost, according to a Nielsen Entertainment study released by Destination America.

The study found that 79 percent of Americans claim some belief in ghosts, and over half claim to have experienced a ghost personally. According to the survey, 57 percent of people reported seeing a ghost, 53 percent reported hearing a ghost, and 51 percent reported feeling something they could not explain.

Respondents said that if they had to be haunted by someone, they preferred being haunted by Abraham Lincoln. However, if they were the ghost, 28 percent of people said they preferred to haunt a loved one. More than 1 in 5 said they preferred to haunt an ex.

Nearly 60 percent of people said they enjoyed scary movies, but almost the same percentage said they would pass up buying a haunted house.

The survey also found that as people age, they believe less. The results show that 31 percent of people who responded to the survey over the age of 55 said they did not believe in ghosts at all.

After ghosts, the survey found 47 percent of people believe in aliens.

The survey found that there is a gender gap in belief. More than half of male respondents said they believed in aliens, compared to 40 percent of women, while 64 percent of women believe in ghosts while only 50 percent of men do.

People who are more religious are more likely to believe in ghosts, while people who are not religious are more likely to believe in aliens.
