CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — Neighborhoods of North Highway 17 have a temporary fire station that's operated by the Mt. Pleasant Fire Department.

The Darrell Creek neighborhood posted a message for residents, passing along the good news of a temporary fire station less than five miles away.

"It's nice to know that something is closer, but I didn't really think about it being too far away in the past," said resident Sean Glassberg.

Residents in White Hall Terrace and other neighborhoods past Wando High School say the fire station is overdue.

"This can make a whole lot of difference right here. It will help us and other people, too," said Samuel Brown who moved to White Hall Terrace more than 30 years ago. "We got a lot of subdivisions across the road that's going to come up pretty soon. They will be more busier than us."

He says the fire department is the new neighbor he's always wanted.

"We need fire service, emergency service because we have a lot of senior citizens and everyone else needs them," said Brown.

The station is taking up residence inside the old Berkeley Electric Cooperative. The temporary station is expected to lower insurance premiums set by the ISO.

"They look at distance from the station and how close the hydrants are to get the Class 2, which is the better of the two. You have to be with in five miles of the nearest fire station and have a hydrant within 1,000 feet," said Assistant Fire Chief Robert Wagenbrenner.

He says the residents of Darrell Creek and White Hall Terrace could have experienced higher insurance premiums because they were more than five miles away from a station.

And while this building is only temporary, there's a permanent fix on the way. An architect has been hired to complete the new Station 6.

The station under construction is expected to open in 2015 across from Wando High School.
