Georgetown fire departments hope to land fire boat

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - Fire departments in the Georgetown area are joining forces to try to land grant money to buy a new fire boat.

The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports Georgetown County spokeswoman Jackie Broach said Georgetown Fire/EMS, Midway Fire Rescue and the Georgetown Fire Department are partnering to look for grant possibilities to purchase a fire boat.

City Council on Thursday unanimously approved Georgetown Fire Chief Joey Tanner's request to seek the grant money.

Seven buildings were destroyed in the Sept. 25 fire along the city's waterfront. The fire put 130 people out of work and displaced nearly 10 families who were living in apartments above the buildings.

Georgetown Councilman Paige Sawyer says the city has a fire boat, but it wasn't big enough to help with the fire.
