Beaufort County sheriff taking over 911 services

Posted: Updated:

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office has taken over the area's enhanced 911 service and other emergency and traffic-management operations.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports ( ) Saturday the shift was completed Oct. 7. Lt. Col. Neil Baxley is heading up the new Emergency Management Division.

Sheriff P.J. Tanner says the change brings his office closer to completing a technology and information systems overhaul.

Within a year, Tanner says the division plans to purchase a new computer-aided dispatch system and launch a next-generation E911 system that will let residents report crimes through text messages, photos and video.

The county announced in February it would update its E911 system. In March, officials awarded Hargray Communications a 10-year, $2.35 million contract to install fiber-optic lines necessary to make it work.
