Detention center officer charged with DUI

Posted: Updated:

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A detention center officer was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after deputies saw him swerve in and out of a traffic lane Sunday morning, said officials with the Charleston County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said Anthony E. Middleton, 51, of Charleston was driving on I-26 at about 3 a.m.

Deputies stopped Middleton and said he smelled like alcohol, slurred his words and had bloodshot eyes, officials said.

Deputies said Middleton failed field sobriety tests.

He refused to take a breathalyzer test after he was arrested, deputies said.

Officials said he was placed on unpaid administrative leave pending an investigation.
