MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Charleston County jury found a man, accused of hitting and severely injuring a construction worker while driving under the influence back in 2011, guilty.

The verdict was handed down Friday afternoon.

The driver, 36-year-old Daniel Hamrick was found guilty of Felony Driving Under the Influence and sentenced to 15 years in prison.

"Hamrick was a bartender who was responsible for stopping patrons from driving under the influence," said Solicitor Scarlett Wilson. "More than most, he understood those dangers. We are grateful that Judge Jefferson sentenced him to the max."

According to prosecutors, Hamrick was drinking while working as manager of the Dog and Duck Restaurant and Bar at the Park West shopping center in Mt. Pleasant. On his way home from work, Hamrick swerved into a construction zone striking Banks Construction worker Ahmed Garland.

"Garland flipped over the roof of Hamrick's Jeep Commander and landed face down on the back of the paving machine in the right hand lane of U.S. 17 South," a release from the solicitor's office reads. "Mr. Garland suffered numerous facial and skull fractures in addition to a traumatic brain injury which has left him with very limited brain function. Mr. Garland is unable to walk, talk, or otherwise complete very basic human functions."

The accident happened around 3:30 a.m., near George Browder Boulevard, not far from Park West.

Court documents say Hamrick admitted to drinking one pint of beer before he drove. His attorney explained how Hamrick was driving home from his job, and that he was not under the influence.

According to police, Hamrick failed a field sobriety test after he hit the worker.

"There are no winners in a case like this," said Assistant Solicitor Culver Kidd. "I can only hope that others will see the very real dangers of drinking and driving."
