Man washed ashore on Drum Island drunk, police say

Posted: Updated:

DRUM ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- The man a runner spotted shivering on Drum Island early Sunday morning decided to go for a swim after "drinking heavily," police say.

According to Charleston police, the runner said the man was going back and forth between the shallows and lying on the shore in the fetal position. Police said the runner described the man as disoriented and said he was stumbling around on the island.

A Mount Pleasant Fire technical response team rappelled down to the island from the pedestrian walkway, moved him to a fire boat and took the man ashore, where he was then taken to Medical University Hospital by EMS.

The man said he had been working at Art's Bar and Grill on Coleman Boulevard in Mount Pleasant and decided to have several drinks after finishing his shift, police said.

He went on to say that he doesn't know how he made it into the water because he'd had so much to drink; he only remembered swimming for "a really long time," the report states.

After he got out of the water, he tried unsuccessfully for several hours to "call out for a blanket or coat because he was freezing," according to the report.

He did not have any severe injuries.
