Report: 336K in SC could get health care subsidies

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A new national study estimates that 336,000 South Carolinians are eligible for subsidies under the federal health care law if they buy insurance through the government's problem-riddled website.

An analysis released Tuesday by the Kaiser Family Foundation estimates 17 million people nationwide could qualify for subsidies that reduce the cost of health care premiums if they go through online marketplaces. South Carolina is among 36 states where the federal government is running exchange, which has been a technology fiasco since its Oct. 1 rollout. The White House says the website will work for most people by the end of the month.

Subsidies and their amounts are based on a person's income. A single person can make up to $45,960 to qualify. A family of four can earn up to $94,200.
