Willis SPCA saving animals for over 40 years

Posted: Updated:

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- In the 40 years the Frances R. Willis has had its doors open as a safe haven for stray, abandoned and abused pets, there are no telling how many thousands of bonds have been formed between animals and new owners.

Tucker is a 6-year-old, 13-pound Schnauzer mix puppy. He was a stray dog brought into the Francis R. Willis SPCA Animal Shelter a couple weeks ago.

On Tuesday, he received a home, something he may have never before had.

"He just came up to me and he reacted to me really well," said Pamela Aldrich, who's adopting Tucker. "I think he is going to be a great little dog and he is going to be spoiled rotten."

Tucker's story of a broken past is just one of many at the shelter. But unlike Tucker, their futures are not always an adoption.

Ashley Hawkins, the Intake Supervisor at the shelter, says every animal deserves a second chance.

"They have come from bad places and deserve to go to a better place than they were before," she said.

Hawkins says adopting an animal from the shelter saves lives, adding that each pet comes with a host of veterinary services that can save a new owner hundreds of dollars.

"We spray and neuter all our animals. They get microchipped; they get fully vaccinated and de-wormed," she said.

All those services make Tucker all ready for his first outing.

"I'm taking him for a walk," Aldrich said.

It's a necessary initiation into the Aldrich family.

The Willis SPCA is located off of Highway 78 in Summerville, at 136 Four Paws Lane. The SPCA is open on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from noon until 5 p.m. and Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The SPCA is closed on Wednesdays.

Adoption fees vary. Adoptions for kittens are $120, and $65 for adult cats. Most adult dogs are adoptable for $80. Puppies and small dogs are available for $150.
